Caity Baser @ O2 Guildhall Southampton

Alia Smallwood Thomas April 13, 2024

If you haven’t already heard of Caity Baser, she’s Southampton’s own pop princess who went viral on TikTok during the pandemic and became a bit of an online sensation with her great vocals, contagious energy and funny videos. Her music challenges the societal views on female sexual empowerment with songs like “Why Can’t I Have Two?” referring to her interest in two guys at the same time, and “Pretty Boys” suggesting towards the male version of the ‘blonde bimbo/airhead’ persona that society like to put on women. She’s not afraid to ask the question, why is it ok for boys to do these things but it’s seen as shameful when girls do?

I only came across Caity’s music about a year or so ago but was hooked instantly after hearing the bop that is ‘Friendly Sex’ (original version). With this being my first experience of Caity Baser live, I could only imagine what sort of show it would be. I knew she had energy, but didn’t realise how much of it she had. She’s been open on the fact that one of her biggest inspirations growing up was Freddie Mercury (Queen) and it shows. She was born to be on stage, that’s for sure, quite literally bouncing across the stage at various times throughout the set. The great thing about Caity is that she’s incredibly down to Earth with it all. She speaks to the crowd (majority female, and a high percentage being young girls in their teens/early twenties) as if they’re her mates, telling stories of her experiences in relation to her songs, and bringing a huge sense of community to the room - a girl gang in it’s most beautiful sense. She makes you feel like she’s got you.

This was Caity’s homecoming show. The biggest hometown headline show she’s played, and I don’t think she could have asked for it to go any better. With a packed room, the audience singing all her songs right back to her, and her family and friends in tow, I have no doubt it was a truly memorable night for her… and she’s still got two shows left of her headline tour!

Thank you to Chosen Music Management for having me down to the show. The show was wild, super fun, and wholesome, all at the same time.
