Black Foxxes @ Le Pub, Newport. The first show of three 2-hour set shows without supports.

The Return of Black Foxxes

Alia Smallwood Thomas October 1, 2023

2020 saw the last Black Foxxes album, which helped many of us get through a tough year or two. During the last 3 years social media has shown us there’s been the odd show, lots of travels, and an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign for the band which will bring us the eagerly awaited new album, ‘The Haar’. Friday night September 30th, kicked off a set of three 2-hour set shows by the band, with the first being in the town of Newport, Wales. No supports. Just 2 straight hours of those good old Black Foxxes riffs and melodies we all love (with a quick interval/wine break, in the middle.)

Having never been to Le Pub before, I was unsure of what to expect, but it’s a great small venue. The show was sold out and the room was pretty packed. The crowd, varying in ages, was more ‘low key’ than I expected but you could tell that everyone was just quietly enjoying themselves and getting into the music. The set tailored to all levels of Black Foxxes fans, with a couple of oldies from the beginning like the popular “I’m Not Well”, to “Saela”, “Joy” and “It Had To Be You” from Reidi, and a number of songs from the self-titled album including “Drug Holiday”, “Jungle Skies”, “The Diving Bell”, and what is now the classic end to a Black Foxxes set, “Badlands”. Throw in a few debut live performances of new songs from “The Haar” and you’ve got yourself a great setlist.

The new songs intrigued me a lot. What to expect? From what we heard, melancholy and heartfelt lyrics - we know they do this well. I’m sure it’s not all sadboi vibes though. I can’t at this point say much more than that, but I’m really excited to hear the full album. Perhaps then we’ll hear of a larger scale tour?… There’s been talks of some EU shows happening next year that are yet to be announced, so maybe UK Black Foxxes fans will be in for another treat too. Lets hope so.
